One New Blog Created Every Second Means Yours Is Irrelevant Unless

Blogs and the activity of blogging went mainstream a long time ago so much so that these days every 1.5 seconds a new blog is created! Crazy huh? Put another way:

7.4 Million blogs were created in the last 120 days

1.5 Million blogs were created in the past 7 days

900,000 blogs created in the last 24 hours

37,500 blogs created every hour

Those are downright scary figures especially if you are just creating a blog today because it is a reflection of the extent of the competition facing you today! So what really made blogs and the activity of blogging so popular?

Why Blogs Became So Popular

Well before blogging became so mainstream and the internet became literally saturated with millions upon millions of blogs, the activity was pretty much restricted to only the truly savvy online marketers (who traditionally set the pace for the rest of the crowd) and the geeks. Once those marketers realized the significant advantages blogs held over normal websites they quickly, quietly and efficiently converted their traditional websites to the blog platform. Here’s why they did it:

1. Blogs are quickly indexed by search engines;

2. A blog is easy to update and add content to frequently;

3. Frequently updating content encourages visitors to return to your blog;

4. You don’t need to know HTML or any other web coding language to manage a blog;

5. Blogs embrace the 2-way conversation interactivity that is so important to today’s business environment;

6. Social Media Websites welcome and are the perfect fit for blogs;

7. Blogs rise up the search engines quickly;

8. It is dead easy to attract web traffic to a blog even if it is brand new;

9. New content added to your blog is instantly viewable and just as quickly picked up by the search engines; and

10. You don’t need to be a web designer or have web designing skills to create a cool and professional-looking blog that stimulates visitor confidence and enhances their interaction.

What those ten attributes listed above so characteristic of blogs essentially mean, is that a blog would invariably and inevitably beat a normal website when it comes to attracting web traffic and attaining exposure! What blogging had fundamentally done was to level the playing field so that even absolute beginners could take on well-established traditional websites that had had thousands of backlinks and been around for several years. What is more not only were blogs competing effectively with them but actually beating them at their own game!

Before long blogs were popping up as the number one listings throughout Google’s index for the most competitive keyword terms! Slowly and surely those traditional websites that had maintained a vice-like grip on the top-spot listings on Google for an eternity slowly lost their rankings to a large number of blogs.

Soon enough the secret was out that blogs wielded a considerable advantage over traditional websites and before long the activity itself had gone mainstream. Now let’s fast forward to the current situation today where the internet is super-saturated with blogs to the tune of a new blog being created every 1.5 seconds!

What 900,000 Blogs Created Everyday Means to You!

It used to be that anybody could virtually blog about anything and were almost guaranteed to attract enough traffic to make enough sales to actually justify it as being worth their while. In such a manner a lot of marketers who had embraced blogging early on were able to dominate a good number of niche markets quickly. But that was then and today, well, is today!

Long gone are the good ole days when you could target a small niche, slap together a few mediocre posts to your new blog and attract sufficient traffic to enable you to make money enough to quit your day job! These days most of those once little-saturated and highly-lucrative niche markets are overcrowded with more competitors than their daily web traffic allotment can possibly handle! What that boils down to is that only the very few, very best of blogs are actually able to make money online from their chosen niche markets.

That also means that if you are just creating a blog today, your blog will surely join the millions of mediocre blogs that never make any headway and are quickly abandoned by their owners unless you…

Make Your Blog Stand Out From The Rest Of The Crowd

To succeed as a blogger you have to make your blog stand out from the many other millions of blogs already proliferating all across the internet. This ironically is actually good news for you because most bloggers have absolutely no idea how to distinguish their blogs from the next guy’s. In fact these days there are two kinds of blogging style, the traditional type of blogging known as Old-School Blogging and the more recent style in tune with the current internet business environment known as New-School Blogging.

The big difference between Old-School Blogging and New-School Blogging is that unless your Old-School Blog is already ranking well on the Google Index, you are going to find it extremely difficult to draw enough attention to make your blog profitable. In other words if you start a blog today and adopt old-school blogging techniques then you are almost certainly guaranteed to fail. Why? Because old-school blogging techniques will not enable you to stand out from the crowd which also means that you cannot possible compete against blogs that have been around for a while and are already well-established.

The biggest flaw that old-school blogs suffered from was an inability to consistently draw significant amounts of web traffic!

However if you create a new blog and adopt new-school blogging techniques, within little time you will effortlessly attract lots of web traffic. Which method of blogging you choose will ultimately determine the level of internet success!

It’s Never Too Late to Pin Down Your Niche

When I started blogging on my humor blog back in 2007 I had no plan for what my blog was to be about. I just wanted to write. I knew nothing about blogging, niches, SEO, or any of the other blogging tricks and tips that I have since learned by banging away at my blog for years. When I started my blog I didn’t think about topics or categories. It never occurred to me that I had to pin myself down with a theme to my blog. I had no niche.

Can a personal blog have a niche?

Personal blogs are the worst when it comes to having a niche. Due to the nature of the blog – rambling on about daily events that usually have nothing in common with other posts except hopefully humor and probably motherhood – it’s hard to pin down a niche. But if you want to blog successfully (earn money from ads or work with brands) you need to narrow down your niche.

One can argue that Mommy Blogs are their own niche but one can have a Mommy Blog and only talk about fashion for children (or mothers). You can have a blog about coupon clipping and still be considered a Mommy Blogger. Mommy Blogs are distinguished from, say, political blogs, photography blogs and tech blogs and yet even those examples are general. Each could be narrowed down even more.

Tags and Categories tell the truth about your blog

If you have a personal blog and want to narrow down your niche, take a look at your categories and tags to see what you write about most often. If you have been blogging for a while you will see a pattern take shape easily. If you have only started blogging consider the things you really like to talk about. Once you have chosen your niche remember to use words that describe your niche in your titles and headings.

It’s all about organization

Narrowing down your niche doesn’t mean you are pigeonholed to that one subject but it does mean if you want to gain credibility in that subject (gain traffic from search engines) you need to talk about it on a regular basis. You can still talk about unrelated topics but if you find those other topics have little to do with your niche you might want to consider breaking off your main topic and writing about all the other stuff on another website.

Due to the nature of blogging, especially personal blogging, our blogs are always evolving. Thankfully, having/choosing a niche can keep you on track so that your blog becomes a credible authority in your blogging circle.

If you’re new to blogging and wondering what kind of blog to start you might want to stay away from the coupon blog. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t get an email from Twitter or Facebook with an invitation to follow/friend a new couponing blog. Usually these are mom bloggers who want to share their knowledge about saving money and cutting coupons. I follow/friend back because I want to support bloggers, especially bloggers who aren’t part of a huge corporation or established brand. I want to help out the little guy so I follow/friend all these people back even though I am not much of a couponer.

Many Fish, Big Pond

The problem is there are so many coupon blogs out there that there is no way most of them have a chance to be huge traffic draws. The competition for keywords is just too great and while most bloggers who start a new blog don’t do a lot of research into keywords and traffic (this is something the amateur blogger learns as she goes) the would be wise to stay away from one of the most saturated blog niches out there.

Lack of knowledge isn’t the only problem, corporations have gotten on the bandwagon following the success of Groupon and so there are hundreds of websites dedicated to saving people money all while earning a nice sum for themselves. Companies such as Groupon, Living Social and Shortcuts have a lot of money behind them (usually venture capital but that’s another post) so they can afford to buy advertising from Google and other search engines and they have the financing behind them to do marketing that just isn’t feasible to the average at home blogger. Once a website such as Groupon is established through online, television and radio marketing they don’t need to worry about ranking for keywords anymore. They might not be too big to fail but they are certainly big enough to not have to worry about ranking for keywords because people don’t need to search for them.

Big Fish In Your Own Pond

If you are dead set on starting a coupon blog then consider what your unique angle is. What does your website provide that other ones don’t. Does your website design stand out? Does your blog have a sense of humor? Think about why people will want to visit your website over another one and then work on that angle. Coupons can be found anywhere but if your website offers your readers something the other coupon websites don’t you can beat the game. It will take a lot of hard work but if you have a unique angle you can do it. You just really have to stick out.

Not Enough “Different”

windy Not Enough Different

Many of you have been following fellow blogger Kathy from the Junk Drawer as she related stories about her beloved Windy. For years Windy has been there for Kathy, and her co-workers. Day in and day out, Windy was there lending her support and showing people what real endurance is. Sadly, Windy passed away October 29th due to a freak snowstorm. I can only imagine why it took Kathy so long (over a month) to find just the right words to honor her friend. It’s hard to sum up another being, one who was so amazing and special, in just a few words – which makes getting those words right all the more important.

Celebrate your inner geek/dork/nerd

For those of you not familiar with Windy or The Junk Drawer, Windy was a plastic bag that got caught in the tree outside Kathy’s office. Kathy grew to love Windy in a way reserved for children who don’t talk back and furry animals who are house trained. Windy was so special she was honored with a birthday cake each year, not to mention the many posts dedicated to her plight, on Kathy’s blog.

How to make your blog stand out

Windy was different. The way Kathy talked about Windy was different too. You don’t see that kind of love and appreciation for another very often. For some reason the story of Windy resonated with people and they became very attached to her. More importantly, the story of Windy attracted interesting readers to Kathy’s blog. Kathy’s comment section is a great place to start if you are looking for wonderful blogs to follow. If you are looking to find talented writers look no further than her comment section, it’s filled with them because Kathy writes so well and because she is willing to tell the stories we secretly care about. Given a choice would you rather read about Kim Kardashian’s latest divorce/sex tape/ shopping trip or would you rather read about a special friend caught in the winds of change? Don’t answer, I already know.

That’s how a well written blog is developed. It’s different and there isn’t enough “different” out there these days. Sure, there are a whole lot of copy cat blogs. Blogs that try to look and feel like the Pioneer Woman and Dooce are a dime a dozen. Talent is another thing altogether. Different gets you on NPR’s All Things Considered.

What’s your Different?

What is special about your blog? Have you found your different? If you haven’t now is the time to do that. Free yourself. Talk about the quirky things in your life, we all have them. Wear your dork proud and show the world you’re “different enough”. You will find your blog will blossom with new and interesting readers.
