Thanks for the links to Savvy Writing Careers! Being a freelance writer is cool. It's nice to create your own hours and schedule. If you feel like taking a day or afternoon off, you can.

i joined this week, Jenn. But I'm totally lost on how to use the bloody thing. I added the "pin it" button to my toolbar but I'm damned where the pages go that I click. I'll have to keep working at it. But it looks cool.

Thanks for the informative part involving this phishing scam. I just received one quite similiar. I hope you revise your article though in reference to the customer service. I think you'll find they run a 40% on friendly, problem solving and even trying to get to speak with a LIVE person. They have zero need to retain you but love to pass you around and get you off the line.

I once saw a great, encouraging article that showed how much greater a writer's chances were for success in publishing if he/she JUST DIDN'T GIVE UP.

Many folks tend to fall away from it simply because of feeling overwhelmed by rejection or lack of results. Sticking to it really does seem to go a long way.

I'm glad you're both sharing with your students the reality of the business, AS WELL as offering the encouragement they need.

As writers, the process can feel rather isolating, so it can be hard to know what's "normal."

excellent article and great advice. I'm a publisher and I teach a workshop on finding your own publishing path. There is always a lot of discussion about how many books you can expect to sell and it's sad to see so many writers feeling dejected that their book sales are low. A little dose of reality, plus a whole lot of hard work, can help turn those numbers around. Unfortunately, not many writers want to hear that. They give up before giving their book a real chance. I plan to link to your post on my press blog today to share your ideas.

In comments = rude. Private email = perfectly acceptable. I find most grammar police like to do it because it makes them feel better about themselves NOT because they want to help the other person especially if they can do it publicly.

I will tell people if spinach is in their teeth or their fly is open because it is embarrassing. However, most people don't equate spinach in their teeth as being connected to whether they are a smart person or not. People equate bad grammar with a person being unintelligent instead of a simple embarrassment.

I make more mistakes worrying about making a mistake and having people think I am stupid. I refuse to make another person feel the same way.
